  • Abstract
In the light of the field investigation on Bashu Cliffside Carvings and analysis of historical documents,this paper shows that the Central Pillar Grotto which was originated from ancient India is of epoch-making significance in the grotto temples.After the Northern Dynasties in China,the Central Pillar Grotto was replaced by Fudou Ceiling Grotto and became the major shape of Chinese grotto.This paper presents the spatial composition and the origin of the Central Pillar Grotto of Bashu Cliffside Carvings in order to explore the cultural connotation of Bashu religious architecture.
